Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy (OT) involves facilitating participation in an individual’s preferred occupations (meaning, activities). Occupational Therapists (OT’s) provide expertise in improving, developing, or restoring function, particularly related to seating/positioning modifications, handwriting, motor skills, sensory processing skills, organizing self and materials, self-care skills, and safety for students.

School-based OT’s promote motor and sensory development and encourage the student’s participation in everyday routines and activities that are part of the educational program. Spectrum Academy’s Occupational Therapy Team includes licensed Occupational Therapists and Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants.

At Spectrum Academy, the role of the Occupational Therapist is three-fold:

  1. Promote functional participation through an eclectic therapeutic approach.  All students receive instruction through classroom-based groups, which address such skills as self-regulation, handwriting, and social skills. When OT is a part of a student’s educational program (IEP), he or she may also receive services through consultation or environmental modifications, direct services inside the classroom, and/or through individual or small-group intervention outside the classroom.

  2. Collaborate with other professionals (teachers, speech-language pathologists, counselors, behavior specialists, etc.) to provide evidence-based services and to develop research-supported programs. They adopt creative, forward-thinking approaches to develop individual and school-wide programs that promote progress.

  3. Provide ground-breaking sensory interventions. The Occupational Therapy team at Spectrum Academy meets the sensory needs of each student using our wide variety of supports. We have suspended equipment and calming sensory rooms in each school that are accessible to all students daily. Sensory equipment is available to all classrooms and to all students, regardless of developmental level. Students learn self-regulation techniques using the Zones of Regulation curriculum taught in every class and overseen by our Occupational Therapists.

Speech Therapy

Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP’s) prevent, assess, and treat a variety of communication disorders. SLP’s address speech sounds, language disorders, social communication disorders, cognitive disorders (executive function, planning, problem solving, etc.), and feeding and swallowing disorders. Spectrum Academy’s Speech Team includes Speech-Language Pathologists and Speech-Language Technicians.

At Spectrum Academy, SLP’s provide services on an individual basis, through in-class and out-of-class groups, through consultation and environmental modifications, and the provision of Alternative and Augmentative Communication devices.

Our SLP’s frequently push into classrooms and other educational settings to model strategies and provide intervention in a student’s natural environment.

Assistive Technology

Spectrum Academy has its own assistive technology team, supported through the Utah Center for Assistive Technology. Our team is currently made up of 2 OT’s, 3 speech-language pathologists, and one special education teacher.

Our team conducts formal and informal evaluations and collaborates with students and staff to provide high- and low-tech solutions for learning. We have a lending library of devices available for trial, including communication devices, writing alternatives, and supports for behavior, executive function, and reading.

Behavior Instruction

The ultimate goal of behavior instruction for students at Spectrum Academy is to help the students develop the skills necessary to engage in learning and social opportunities. Whether this is academic, social, or self-regulation skills, we focus on helping them gain the ability to function successfully across a variety of settings.

We believe that behavior management is the critical foundation of an effective educational setting for all students. To help our students establish this foundation, we maintain school-wide behavior expectations that our staff teach and reinforce throughout the school day.

Behavior Support Systems
We provide various supports and interventions as part of our positive behavior support system. Systems such as our PRIDE/PACK rules, Level-up system, and Principals Club help teach proper behaviors in various contexts.

Spectrum’s Level-Up program is a school-wide positive behavior support system developed by school staff to address the needs of students across all ability and developmental levels. Level-Up has proven successful in promoting positive student behavior in accordance with classroom expectations.

Behavior Interventions
Behavior Specialists provide supportive interventions for the purpose of effective positive behavioral change. They utilize evidence-based techniques to conduct Functional Behavior Assessments and develop Behavior Intervention Plans.

In a school, behavior specialists use a variety of behavior analytic techniques to promote safe and productive participation in an educational program. Spectrum Academy’s Behavior Team includes Behavior Specialists and Behavior Assistants.

At Spectrum Academy, our Behavior Specialists play a critical role.

  • They collaborate with teachers and classroom staff to provide strong behavior supports within the student’s natural environment.

  • They provide individual and small-group instruction to teach new skills that will help our students succeed now and in the future.

  • They provide direct behavior support, when needed, in compliance with State and Federal regulations.

Mental Health

School-based Mental Health (SBMH) encompasses promoting wellness, social, emotional, and behavioral health, and coping skills necessary for meeting life's challenges. Comprehensive school-based mental health services are integral to achieving this, directly contributing to positive student well-being and maximizing overall educational outcomes.

Students whose mental wellness is supported have better outcomes in school and in life. SBMH services support a positive school climate and are available to all students in a multi-tiered system of support.

SBMH Service Providers collaborate in multi-disciplinary teams to increase access to early identification of mental health needs. They also help support students and their families overcome barriers in accessing mental health services by connecting families to services within the school setting or through community partners.

Medical Support

Students with chronic health conditions that may require intervention while attending school require an up-to-date health care plan each school year. Please fill out the associated health care form with your student's health care provider and notify your school nurse to set up a meeting to review the health care information.

If your student requires a daily or emergency medication of epinephrine, asthma medications, seizure medications, or diabetic medications and supplies the medication forms are within the associated health care plans found below. For all other daily and emergency prescription medications, please fill out the Prescription Medication Authorization Form found above.

Students may be allowed to assume responsibility for carrying and administering their own medications such as asthma medication, epinephrine, or diabetic supplies, if approved by the student's health care provider, guardian, and school nurse.

“Throughout my career, I have found that good education is the greatest propellant into a life full of curiosity, adventure, and success. When students are presented with opportunities to gather knowledge and learn new skills, they can tackle any problem the world presents with excitement and optimism. We want our students to have the skills to be the leaders of their own journey and future. Their future is bright.

As a related services team, we work collaboratively with the teachers to provide both supports and interventions to propel our students into those learning opportunities. Our goal is to help our students overcome any barriers that slow down the learning process. With our multidisciplinary team, we work together to help each student succeed.

I want nothing more than to see your student become the fullest version of themselves. I am excited to work together with our amazing team to build the resources necessary for your student to grow and become passionate about life. Together, we can give each student the opportunity for the bright future they deserve.”
